The Jasper Jackalope OST

Jasper Jackalope is a theoretical platformer created by the theoretical Olivo Instant Grits Company.  In every commerical Jasper has to protect his grits from the evil Cecil Coyote.  The game itself is an homage to Sonic the Hedgehog.  I decided to make this soundtrack before I made the actual game.  The songs are fun cut and paste chiptune samples with some beatboxing laid over the top and I realy like the sound.  I offered some of these loops for Dave Kelly to use on Something Awful's Flash Tub a while back and it was pretty cool when he actually did!  Here is the first draft of most of the soundtrack to Jasper Jackalope.  I still probably need a continue song and maybe a game over.

Pandaland

Pandaland is a Windows platformer based around Swedish indie-girl culture.  It was first announced about 2 years ago, but the creators finally got around to finishing it up.  It's about as difficult and lengthy as your average promotional flash game (although there is a hidden hard mode), but the chiptunes and pixel art 110% nail a perfect "informed-by-but-better-than-NES" aesthetic that for once doesn't feel like a programmer who couldn't afford artists.  Using up to jump is kind of weird and Amiga-y, but this thing really sings and swings.  A perfect videogame after dinner mint.  Go play it!

The Robots of George Beker

As a kid with and interest in designing games, I would pore over BASIC code copying and pasting and remixing things into my own weirdo designs (which I still basically do.  I should really learn a proper language someday) .  In a a few of the programming books, there were wonderful, lively illustrations by George Beker.  Beker took the metaphor of a computer playing a game to it's logical end, an drew robots engaged in simulated activities.  The drawings are a lot of fun and remind me a little bit of the dozens of robot jokes from Futurama.  I wouldn't be surprised if the very nerdy writing staff of that show might have taken some inspiration from Beker's doodles.  Here are some of my favorites:

The Unbridled Enthusiasm of 1980's era Caucasian Youth

They're fruit snacks...to go
Some of Link and Mario
Boogie Boogie to the sound
C'mon, baby, let's get down
Face
Jammin all over the place
Keep it movin'
Don't be late
Yeah, baby, work it out
C'mon, ya'll, twist and shout
Talkin' about those fruit snacks
They come in bright packs
So we like 'em like that
And I'll bring some back

Chorus:
Super Mario (Real Fruit Snacks)
Nintendo (Fruit Snacks to go go)
Super Mario (Real Fruit Snacks)
Nintendo (With characters of Nintendo)
Super Mario (Real Fruit Snacks)
Nintendo (Let your fingers snap)
Super Mario (Real Fruit Snacks)
Nintendo (While you do the Mario rap)

Princess Toadstool is my friend
So sing along to the end
Dance Dance Dance to the beat
Move my body in my seat
Party all day and night
Make it loose
Keep it tight
Like 1 2 3
Or Mario, Toad, and Luigi
Do your dance
Dancing machine
Don't be dirty
Keep it clean
Move to the east...and west
Shake your body and nothing less

Chorus

Move quick around the land
Everybody just clap your hands
Party with me...and Shyguy
C'mon try try try
Princess Zelda, sing your song
Cause Link won't be long
Listen to the words...I say
There's gonna be a brighter day
Yeah Yeah Yeah
Keep it movin'
Now you're jammin'
And I'm groovin'
If I try really hard
Maybe I might be a star

Chorus x 2

Mike The Cat's Legal Defense Fund

Mike the Cat's Legal Defense Fund is a game where you play as an bitter cat who has been financially screwed over by a greedy internet website.  He has to burst into the headquarters and face a gauntlet of challenges to get his money back.  I was inspired to make this game after playing through the arcade kusoge Trio the Punch.  I started working on this for the selectbutton Bakedown 2009 competition, but never followed up on it.  It is made in Multimedia Fusion and the levels are actually not too difficult to make.  Mike can shoot lasers from his eyes, breathe fire, play the electric guitar, and turn into a ghost.  He uses these skills to solve puzzles within the game.  From a conceptual standpoint, I still need to decide how many overall levels the game will have.  I programmed a snakes and ladders style-backend thinking I was going to build a hundred levels, but I'm not sure I can come up with that many interesting ideas within the framework of the engine.

The theme you hear throughout the game is a remix I made of the CBS Storybreak theme song, which was one of my absolute favorite songs as a kid.  The sound effects are from freesound.org and sfxr.  I really need to set aside some time every week to continue working on this one because it's actually very fun to build for.
